Velo Club Long Eaton's racing season got underway last weekend with a 15 mile hilly time trial over the West Leake - Kingston on Soar - Sutton Bonnington course.

Fifteen club riders faced timekeepers Bruce Townsend and Kevin Gough under sunny, dry conditions, but with a strong blustery south-westerly wind.

There was a shock result when 17 year old junior Luke Seamer, who also competes in Triathlons, proved to be the fastest rider winning in 42-40. Club veteran road champion Brian Peto took second place in 43-58 from Jon Hartley who clocked 44-06. Other times were:

February3rd

Velo Club Long Eaton attracted a total of 64 entrants for its two cycling reliability trials last weekend, which were held in strong, cold blustery south easterly winds. 21 of the riders were from the host club while other clubs represented included Ashfield RC, Total Fitness, Derby Mercury RC, Sherwood CC, South Pennine RC, FSA, Beeston RC, Go Sport Specs, Matlock CC, CTC and Brereton Wheelers.

There was good support for the main event over a 65 mile hilly route via Ashbourne - Newhaven - Cromford with semi-pro David Clarke of Derbyshire the first to return in 3 hours 5 minutes.  Leading Velo Club riders were Sean Thorpe and Rory Screaton with a time of 3 hours 20 minutes.

The flatter, shorter 40 mile event to Tutbury catered mainly for the veterans with the first group to return after 2 hours 25 minutes containing Velo Club riders Nigel Whatmough, Mark Daine and Steve Foster.

28th January

Velo Club Long Eaton will be promoting their annual Reliability Trials this Sunday (3rd February) to test the fitness of its riders.

Two optional routes are available, both starting from the Old Post Office, Tamworth Road, Long Eaton with signing -on from 9.00am and the first groups sent away at 9.30am.

The longer and more testing ride will be the traditional hilly 65 mile route via Derby, Ashbourne, Newhaven, Via Gellia, Cromford and return via Derby to Long Eaton within the time limits of four to five and a half hours.

The shorter event will be the flatter 40 mile ride to Swarkeston, Willington, Hilton and Tutbury, returning via Stretton, Willington and Shardlow to Long Eaton within three to four and a half hours.

Entry fee is £1 and certificates will be awarded to all successful riders.

The Velo Club's young cyclo-cross exponent, Joe Kirkham, has progressed well this season after transferring to the higher Youth category of the local Notts and Derby Cyclo-Cross League.   In his latest outing at Watchwood Plantation, Calverton, Notts he finished in 6th place, but has risen to 3rd position overall in the current League standings for his category with two more events to go.

25th November

Organiser Rory Screaton promoted the Velo Club Long Eaton's annual cyclo-cross event last Saturday on an undulating course at Trent Meadows, Long Eaton.
There was a good turn-out of local cyclists for the four race categories and the main senior event developed into a clear win for Steve Adams of Derby based Merlin Racing Team from Ian Field (Hargroves Cycles) and Ben Eedy (South Pennine RC). Velo Club's Richard Kirkham tackled the event on his mountain bike, finishing lower down the field.
Velo Club's best ride was by 12 year old Joe Kirkham taking sixth place in the Youth category behind winner Steve Lowe (Merlin RT). Three of the Club's youngsters took part in the Under 10's event, James Ingram finishing 23rd, Erica Screaton 24th and Charlie White 25th. In the Under 12's race, Tiffany Fletcher came in 8th and Laura Addison 9th

18th November

Velo Club Long Eaton held their 2nd Annual Dinner and Prize Presentation for over 70 members and friends at Cleve Lodge, Long Eaton at the weekend.

Chairman Nigel Brown reported that the cycling club's first year had been successful, promoting various events in the district and had provided winners in the junior, senior and veteran racing membership. He also mentioned that major prizewinner, Mark Redwood,  was in hospital after a car accident the previous weekend.

Guest of Honour was local Leicestershire rider Geoff Platts of the De Rosa Racing Team who remarked on the spirit present in local cycling club's like the VC Long Eaton. 

Veteran Brian Peto responded on behalf of the prizewinners,
thanking all the helpers who had contributed to the success of the Club's first year.

Among the honours were: Russ Holmes (Club B.A.R., Veterans B.A.R., 50 mile Champion, Freewheeling Champion and John Needham Trophy), Mark Redwood (25 mile and 100 mile Champion, Eva Wells Trophy, 10 mile TT Points winner), Gill Henshaw (Ladies B.A.R.), Joe Kirkham (Junior Roadman, Cyclo-cross cup, John Price Trophy, Most Promising Young Rider), Brian Peto (Veterans Roadman), Neil Shaw (Hill Climb), Geoff Carter (Handicap 10), Simon Davis, Neil Addison and John Beardsley (Most Meritoriuos Ride) for the their charity rides during the year raising over £7,000 for various causes and Maurice Buxton (Clubman of the Year).


21st October
With the beginning of the cyclo-cross season, Velo Club Long Eaton's young riders returned to action at Thornyridge, Bakewell.

12 year old cyclo-cross exponent Joe Kirkham, now competing in a higher category this year,  finished in 6th place in the Youth race.  Tiffany Fletcher, in her first season finished 8th in the Under 12's event.

Joe Kirkham then won the schoolboys half-mile Regional Hill Climb at Starkholmes, Matlock in a time of 1minute 09seconds.

He then finished 6th and Toby Fletcher 12th in the Youth category at Markeaton Park. At the same event, 10 year-old Tiffany Fletcher came 8th (second girl) in the Under 12's race. In the Under 10's race, 8 year-old Erica Screaton finished in 32nd place.

In the latest meeting at Bramcote Park, Joe Kirkham moved up the placings to finish 4th in his category, while Tiffany Fletcher came 11th and Erica Screaton 21st in their respective categories.

14th October


In the Markeaton Park, Derby, Cyclo-cross event at the weekend, Velo Club Long Eaton youngsters were in action. 12 year-olds Joe Kirkham finished 6th and Toby Fletcher 15th in the Youth Category, while 10 year old Tiffany Fletcher finished 8th (second girl) in the Under 12's race. In the under 10's category, Erica Screaton finished in 32nd place.


7th October
With the beginning of the local cyclo-cross season, Velo Club Long Eaton's 12 year old exponent Joe Kirkham returned to action at Thornyridge, Bakewell. Velo Club Long Eaton lost one of its senior members last week with the death of Eric Forshaw, aged 65 years, after a long illness. Eric, of Castle Donington was a prominent worker in the merger of the Long Eaton CC and Long Eaton Paragon CC during 2006 to form the new Velo Club. He will be greatly missed for his vision of promoting a youth policy in the Club.




9th September
Velo Club Long Eaton held their annual one mile hill climb and freewheeling championships on the Cat and Fiddle hill, Dale Abbey last Thursday evening in fine conditions.

It was a good turnout which resulted in a close finish for the hill climb, but Neil Shaw took the honours with a lung-bursting 2-36 effort from joint second placed riders Colin Franklin and Tom Hitchcock in 2-43. Other Velo Club riders were: R.Holmes 2-45, M.Daine 2-54, N.Addison 2-55, S.Foster 3-00, P.Helm 3-04, A.Dalzell 3-05, P.Needham 3-07, J.Moore 3-17, G.Carter 3-24, M.Curtis 3-31.
Following the climb, the riders took part in the freewheeling contest, with Russ Holmes travelling the furthest distance,
leaving Matthew Curtis in second spot and Mark Daine third.
The Veterans National 30 mile time trial championship took place at the weekend on the Derby-Uttoxeter course. Russ Holmes set a new club record with a 1-10-00 ride and Russ elliott finished in 1-36-08.



1st September
Velo Club Long Eaton held their final 10 mile cycle time trial of the season at Kingston-on-Soar on Thursday evening. Although blustery conditions prevailed, some creditable times were returned by the 23 riders, with Mark Redwood coming out on top again with a 22-24 ride. Other Velo times were: R.Holmes 24-14, J.McMahon 24-44, T.Hitchcock 25-44, L.Seamer (Junior) 26-03, J.Hartley 26-40, S.Wakefield 26-53, N.Addison 27-21, C.Franklin 28-04, P.Helm 28-25, M.Curtis 28-53, J.Moore 28-55, G.Carter 29-02, A.Dalzell 29-02, G.Record 34-17.

The leading overall positions for the 2007 10 mile time trial points league, taking into account the fastest and handicap placings of the riders, are: 1. Mark Redwood 716 points, 2. Russ Holmes 505 points, 3. Geoff Carter 455 points, 4. Luke Seamer 451 points, Colin Franklin 417 points.
This week's racing results include a win for juvenile Joe Kirkham in the Darley Moor 'Under 12's' road race, near Ashbourne, and Russ Holmes established a new record time for the Club's Open 10 mile time trial when he clocked 22-42 in the North Notts Olympic event at Tuxford with Sean Thorpe finishing in 24-05. Veterans Gill Henshaw and Russ Elliott travelled to Goostrey, Cheshire where they recorded 1-16-15 and 1-20-35 respectively in the VTTA '25'.
The Velo Club hold their annual hill climb and freewheeling championship this Thursday, 6th September on the Cat and Fiddle Climb between West Hallam and Dale Abbey. First rider off at 6.45 pm.


17th August
The cold, wet conditions for Velo Club Long Eaton's evening 10 mile time trial at Kingston on Soar last week resulted in slower times for all the 23 riders.
Mark Redwood was the fastest in 23-14 and the other Velo Club riders were: R.Holmes 24-55, P.Westmorland 25-13, L.Seamer (Junior) 25-55, N.Shaw 26-01, G.Storey 26-04, C.Franklin 27-02, N.Addison 27-31, Helen Gorman 28-53, A.Dalzell 29-35, G.Carter 29-51, J.Mitchelmore 32-15, I.Straw 34-25.
In the Veterans 35 mile Handicap road race at Wysall, Mick Draper took 3rd place in the sprint finish.



12th August
Velo Club Long Eaton promoted its first Open 25 mile cycling time trial at Griffydam at the weekend in windy but dry conditions, and its riders came away with the major honours.

Velo Cub's Mark Redwood won the event and the 'Ern Buttler' Memorial Trophy in a time of 57 minutes 34 seconds from Geoff Platts (De Rosa RT) 57-53 with Sussex visitor Matt Green (In Gear Development Squad) third in 57-57. The host Club also won the team prize, Redwood being backed by Paul Spencer, 1-0-56, and Russ Holmes 1-2-03.
Other Velo riders were Dave Meaden 1-8-44, and Jim Wild 1-17-00.

7th August

A busy period of cycle racing resulted in some high placings for Velo Club Long Eaton riders. Mark Redwood set a 25 mile record and became the first open event time trial winner for the new Club when he won the Melton Olympic '25' on the A1 in Notts in the fast time of 53-33. Last week he finished fourth at Tuxford, North Notts in the Ashfield Road Club '25' with a 55-30 ride.

Gilll Henshaw, the Velo Club's senior lady veteran rider had a successful trip to Hull where she broke the Ladies veterans record for age 72/73 years with a 25-42 ride. Then at the weekend she finished seventh in the Veterans 35 mile road race at Norwell, East Notts.
Thursday evening's 10 mile time trial at Kingston on Soar was held in fine conditions and resulted in another win for Mark Redwood in 22-21. Velo Club's two long distance charity riders, Neil Addison and John Beardsley, successfully completed their 750 journey from Ilkeston to Lourdes in France despite excessive heat and wheel troubles.
This weekend the Velo Club promote their first Open 25 mile Time Trial at Griffydam, North Leicestershire. A good class field include local riders Geoff Platts and Ashley Long, while the host Club field Mark Redwood, Dave Spencer, Russ Holmes, Dave Meaden and Jim Wild.


30th July

Threatening rain clouds reduced the field for Velo Club Long Eaton's evening 10 mile time trial at Kingston on Soar last week. Unbeaten Mark Redwood claimed first spot again with a 22-39 effort.Other Velo riders were: R.Holmes 24-31, M.Hammerton 24-35, P.Westmorland 25-29, L.Seamer (Jnr) 26-17, D.Meaden 26-43, C.Franklin 27-15, J.Mitchelmore 29-00, G.Carter 30-17.

The Velo 10 mile League points tally so far for the leading riders are: M.Redwood 524, G.Carter 348, L.Seamer (Jnr) 346, R.Holmes 341, M.Hammerton 317, M.Curtis 313.

At the weekend Dave Meaden recorded 1-7-40 and Jim Wild 1-11-57 in the Echelon Cycles '25' at Evesham while Russ Holmes clocked 1-0-34 in the Ashield Road Club '25' at Tuxford, North Notts. In mid-week, Jim Wild travelled to Cheshire where he rode the Wills Wheels two-up '25' with Chris Riley, finishing in 1-7-34.

Velo's two charity riders Neil Addison and John Beardsley successfully finished their 750 mile ride from Ilkeston to Lourdes last week despite damaged wheels and excessive heat.

24th July

With the racing season now two-thirds through, Mark Redwood has lost non of his form, producing another winning ride of 22-22 in last week's 10 mile time trial at Kingston-on-Soar, from a 22 strong field. Other Velo Club times were:

At the weekly Mallory Park road races, Joe Kirkham won the Under-12 age category race and will finish the season as best in his class.  He then travelled to Blackpool and took eigth place in the National Youth Series of road races in the Under-12 age category.


17th July

A busy weekend of cycle racing in various weather conditions resulted in some top placings for Velo Club Long Eaton riders. Mark Redwood lowered the new club's 25 mile time trial record by 3 minutes to 53-33 when he won the Melton Olympic event on the windy A1 in East Notts. James McMahon finished with a personal 1-0-01 ride, while Colin Franklin clocked a best 1-3-35 and Ann Butler 1-20-04.

In the Veterans Handicap Road Race at Rampton, Notts in torrential rain, Brian Peto won the bunch sprint to take second place, while Nigel Whatmough riding his first race for 27 years finished fifth. Unfortunate Mick Draper punctured on the last lap.
Several Velo Club members are currently involved in mammoth charity rides. John Beardsley and Neil Addison are in France, riding the 750 miles from Ilkeston to Lourdes
for Cancer Research and the St John Houghton School, while Simon James is about to embark on the 950 mile Land's End to John O' Groats route for Asthma UK.

9th July

Velo Club Long Eaton's Russ Holmes lowered the new club's 25 and 50 mile time trial records during the past week. In the Central District Ladies '25' he clocked a 56-53 ride and this weekend finished in the North Notts Olympic '50' with 2-0-26.

The Velo Club acted as marshalls in the Erewash Novice Triathlon this weekend and were rewarded when member Paul Mettam finished in third place.
In the Walsall Roads CC 25 on the A38 Burton course, Sean Thorpe was best Velo rider with a 1-0-30 ride, followed by Dave Meaden in 1-6-02 and Jim Wild 1-10-53 while senior veteran Russ Elliott broke the national veterans tandem joint average age record for 75 years with 1-7-25 while riding with Joe Summerlin of Leicestershire Road Club.

24th June

A full field of 120 riders from all over the country contested the Velo Club Long Eaton's 100 mile time trial organised by Jim Wild on behalf of the Burton and District Cycling Alliance. Despite a prolonged period of wet weather during the preceding days, the event was run in dry, sunny conditions with a rising Westerley wind on the Etwall - Uttoxeter circuit. Known as the best '100' course in the country under the right conditions, some outstanding times were achieved.

Past champion and event winner, Kevin Dawson (Pinarello RT) from South Yorkshire produced a fine 3-32-18 ride to take the honours from Paul Holdsworth (London) 3-41-39 and Oliver Jones (Wolverhampton) 3-41-55.
Velo Club's Mark Redwood clocked one of the best local times with 3-47-02 to finish eighth and set a marker for the new Long Eaton club's record collection. Other creditable club riders were Russ Holmes 4-11-41, Colin Franklin 4-39-26 and Dave Meaden (first '100').

In the mid-week Plan B Racing 10 mile TT at Etwall, veteran Gill Henshaw finished with a 27-51 ride. The Velo Club ladies team were in action at the weekend on the A1 course in East Notts. Gill Henshaw recorded 1-7-22, Louise Kirkham 1-16-53 and Ann Butler 1-17-36.


17th June

Velo Club Long Eaton's annual 70 mile road race on the Kingston-Sutton Bonnington-West Leake course attracted sixty riders at the weekend.

On the first of the thirteen laps, seven riders broke away which included Jon-Kris Mason from the host club. This determined group stayed away, gaining over three minutes advantage over the chasing main bunch. On the penultimate lap Matt Jennings of Webster Cycles (Leicester) broke away and time-trialled his way to victory. In the following sprint, Websters clubmate Carl Dyson took second place from Simon Keeton of Rutland CC, with Velo Club's best finisher being Jon-Kris Mason in fourth place.
Velo Club's evening 25 mile time trial was held in cold, wet conditions last Thursday with the following result:

In the Veterans 35 mile Handicap Road Race at Granby, Notts, Mick Draper finished sixth and Gill Henshaw ninth in the bunch sprint.
This Saturday, the Velo Club Long Eaton promote one of the countries top 100 mile time trials on behalf of the Burton and District Cycling Association on the Etwall-Uttoxeter road. Organiser Jim Wild has attracted a full field of 120 riders with top seeds being former Champions Kevin Dawson from Yorkshire and Ian Cammish from Cambridgeshire. Velo Club riders include Mark Redwood, Russ Holmes, Dave Meaden and Colin Franklin.


10th June
Velo Club Long Eaton's series of evening 25 mile time trials throughout June got off to a fine start when nineteen riders competed on the West Leake circuit. In perfect conditions, Mark Redwood delivered a scintillating ride to break the course record with a 56-32 effort.

Other Velo Club riders were: J.McMahon 1-4-17, N.Addison 1-7-49, T.Hitchcock 1-8-11, C.Franklin 1-8-16, P.Needham 1-11-05, M.Curtis 1-12-51, P.Helm 1-13-25, G.Carter 1-15-54, A.Dalzell. Best of the private triallists was Clive Lockwood of Derby Mercury RC with 59-43.
In the 10 mile time trial, Paul Spencer showed a promising return to form, clocking 23-52, from Russ Holmes 24-29, Mark Daine 25-13, Ann Buttler 32-32, and Ian Straw 32-36.

This Sunday, the Velo Club Long Eaton promote their first Open event, the 65 mile President's Road Race for competitors from all parts of the country. Russ Gavagan is the organiser and the event starts at 10.00am from Kingston on Soar.

Another fine evening at West Leake for Velo Club Long Eaton's 10 mile time trial saw several good results from the 30 strong field. Mark Redwood was again the top rider with a 22-18 effort, followed by Russ Holmes 23-53, and Matt Hammerton 24-30. Best of the private triallists was student, Dan Brook with a 23-12 ride. This Thursday, the Velo Club promote their series of 25 mile time trials on the same course, commencing at 7.00 pm.
During the week, Joe Kirkham again won the Under '12'
category at the Mallory Park Road Races, while Dave Meaden 1-8-14, and Jim Wild 1-14-12, travelled to a course near Doncaster for a very windy Rutland CC 25 mile time trial.

Mark Redwood produced the fastest time of the year in Velo Club Long Eaton's evening 10 mile time trial at West Leake last Thursday. With a field of thirty-one riders and on a fine evening, Redwood clocked 22-00, over one and a half minutes better than Russ Holmes with 23-42, while Matt Hammerton finished in 23-57 for third spot. Best of the private trialists was Loughborough University student Luke Clarke with a 22-30 ride.
Two Velo Club ladies rode the National 10 mile time trial Championship at Sawtry, Cambidgeshire last weekend. Veteran Gill Henshaw recorded a creditable 28-31 and Louise Kirkham finished in 30-16.
In the Veterans 30 mile Handicap Road Race Series at Rotherham, Brian Peto finished second and Mick Draper fifth in the sprint finish.
Russ Holmes set a 30 mile T.T. marker for the new Velo Club, finishing high up in the field of the Veterans event near Doncaster with a 1-14-26 ride. He then set another marker for the Club when he clocked a 23-16 ride in the Mapperly CC 10 mile time trial at Oxton, Notts.

Forty riders lined up for the Velo Club Long Eaton's Thursday evening 10 mile time trial on the West Leake - Kingston course in fine conditions.

The consistent riding of Mark Redwood gave him another win in the fast time of 22-32, with Paul Spencer second in 23-52 and Russ Holmes third in 24-17. Sixteen year old Luke Seamer continues to improve, this week clocking 25-40 while best lady Helen Gorman slipped back to 30-03.

A keen wind greeted riders in the Velo Club Long Eaton's evening 10 mile time trial at West Leake on Thursday.
Mark Redwood coped best with the conditons, recording a 22-28 ride, followed by Paul Spencer in 24-09 and Russ Holmes third in 24-30. Lee Clarke of Verulam CC (London) was the best of the private triallists with 23-04.
On the time trial scene, Russ Holmes clocked 1-11-06 in the Rudy Project time trial in the Vale of Belvoir while three veteran members contested the BDCA '25' at Etwall ; Dave Meaden 1-5-03, Jim Wild 1-7-48, and Mick Draper 1-11-18.
In the BDCA 2-up 25 at Griffydam, Neil Addison and Matt Curtis finished in 1-15-14.
On the Road Racing scene, Brian Peto had the greatest success finishing second in the Veterans 35 mile Handicap road race at Car Colston, Notts with Mick Draper coming in at fifteen position in the bunch. Mark Jerham continues to contest the sprint finishes, claiming 6th place in the Birmingham CC 40 mile RR while young Joe Kirkham finished 9th in the under
16's race ar Mallory Park.

A fine evening tempted twenty seven riders for Velo Club Long Eaton's opening 10 mile time trial of the season at West Leake.

Mark Redwood was a clear winner with a fast ride of 22-33 from Matt Haigh 24-28, with Matt Hammerton third in 24-35. Other results were:

April 1st

Velo Club members have been involved in various events during the past week. Mark Redwood finished fourth in the Derby Mercury Hilly Time Trial recording a 54-14 ride, Mark Jerham clinched fifth place in the sprint finish of the Leamington Spa 30 lap Criterium and Joe Kirkham was a close second in the 'Under 12's' road race at Darley Moor near Ashbourne. Mick Clower and Peter Drake took part in the 50 mile Charnwood Audax cycle event.

Several Velo Club Long Eaton riders competed in the district's first Open time trial of the new season, a 25 mile 2-up event on the rolling Griffydam - Long Whatton course last Saturday afternoon.

A strong, blustery wind resulted in slower than normal times, but a high placing was earned for Mark Redwood and Russ Holmes with a 1-1-00 effort. Paul Spencer riding with Derby Mercury's Harvey Schofield clocked 1-2-00, Brian Peto with Ross Minton (Base Bikes) finished in 1-7-48 and Peter Jackson with Colin Franklin 1-14-55.




Last Saturday afternoon, four Velo Club Long Eaton riders were amongst the field for the first local time-trial of the new racing season, the Coalville Wheelers '25' based on the Griffydam circuit.Matt Haigh led the way with a 1-5-38 ride, followed by Paul Ireland 1-9-30 and veteran Brian Peto 1-12-30. was the victim of a puncture.
Sunday's clubrun in cloudy conditions was to Stanton on the Wolds by way of Sutton Bonnington, Rempstone, Wymeswold, Six Hills and Willoughby, returning via Bunny and East Leake.
The Velo Club's own racing programme gets under way on Sunday, 4th March with a 15 mile Hilly Time Trial on the West Leake, Kingston, Sutton Bonnington circuit.
The event starts at the Star Inn layby, West Leake and the first rider is off at 10.00 am.

A good turn-out of twenty eight riders competed in the first Velo Club Long Eaton evening 10 mile time trial of the season in fine conditions on the West Leake - Kingston - Sutton Bonnington course. 

All eyes were on club champion Mark Redwood who has made a dramatic comeback from a road accident.  He was hit by a motorist near Burton on Trent while training last Autumn and sustained one badly fractured hip and the other hip was fractured. After a rebuild at Queens Medical Hospital he is gradually getting back to competitive
cycling.

Favourite on the night was 18 year old Luke Seamer, just out of the junior ranks and riding a new lightweight bike.  He did not disappoint finishing with a personal best 24-31 effort.
However, Redwood's rehabilitation was more advanced than anyone could have hope for, and he roared down the finishing lane, clocking a remarkable 24-26 winning ride.

Equal third were Russ Holmes and Sean Thorpe in 25-29, while Helen Gorman was fastest lady in 31-57. Other Velo Club riders were : T.Chillingworth 25-31, J.Dunleary 26-24, J.Hartley 26-30, B.Peto 26-34, C.Franklin 27-19, M.Curtis 27-23, P.Helm 27-31, R.Minton 27-54, M.Daine 28-08, S.Foster 28-13, N.Addison 29-04, R.Truslove 29-22, G.Carter 29-35, A.Dalzell 30-28, G.Kitson 31-25, A.Paton 32-30, Ann Buttler 35-59.

13th April

An unsettled evening with a cool breeze did not deter a  good turn-out of 34 riders for the second of Velo Club Long Eaton's evening 10 mile time trial, held on the West Leake - Kingston course.

All eyes were again on the recovering Mark Redwood and his young challenger Luke Seamer. The conditions generally slowed the riders this week, but the champion Redwood again had the edge, finishing in 24-40 to Seamer's 25-03.
Russ Holmes, making a later start to the season tied for second spot in 25-03, with Hathern's Jon Hartley producing a fine ride for third place in 25-28.  The fastest of the private triallists and overall winner was semi-pro Jon Mozley, clocking 23-27.

Other Velo Club riders were: P.Westmorland 25-41, T.Chillingworth 25-56, J.Dunleary 26-54, C.Franklin 27-11,
B.Peto 27-23, P.Helm
o of the Velo Club veteran road racing riders competed in the Handicap 33 mile event at Car Colston, East Notts. Both riders contested the sprint finish with Nigel Whatmough finishing fourth and Brian Peto twelfth.
 
20th April

It was another good turn-out for the Velo Club Long Eaton evening 10 mile time trial at West Leake but the weather conditions deteriorated during the race to effect the rider's times.

Mark Redwood was again the fastest Velo rider in 24-48, with Castle Donington's Ian Comery second with a 25-10 ride and Phil Westmorland clocked 25-12 for third spot.
Winner of the event was private triallist Jon Mozley (Planet X) of Borrowash in 23-27.

28th April

Four Velo Club Long Eaton riders competed in the Veteran Time Trials Association 25 mile TT at the weekend on the Etwall - Uttoxeter course with good results.

Mark Redwood continued his successful comeback from his horrific cycling injuries, clocking a remarkable 55-50 ride while Russ Holmes finished in 57-33, Brian Peto 1-3-18 and Ann Buttler 1-21-13. 12 year old Joe Kirkham has turned his attention to road racing with great effect now that the cyclo-cross season has ended, finishing third in the Junior section of the Darley Moor RR series.

There was a good field of 28 riders for the Thursday evening 10 mile time trial league at West Leake, with the following results:

Velo Club Long Eaton's Nigel Whatmough, after moving to the district over thirty decades ago from the West Country,  bringing with him a successful racing reputation, has recently returned to competitive cycling with great results.

Last weekend, the retired fabric technologist rode the Veteran's 35 mile handicap road race at Alford, Lincolnshire. Instigating a break on the first lap with another rider, the pair stayed away for the whole race, only for Whatmough to be beaten into second place in the sprint finish.  He returns to Norwell in North Notts this weekend for next road race in the Veterans series.

Also on the road racing scene, Joe Kirkham again took third place in the Youth race at Mallory Park.

In the evening 10 mile time trial league at West Leake this week, the riders were caught in heavy downpours of rain. However, Russ Holmes mastered the wet conditions to
record a 24-24 winning ride while the other main contender, young Luke Seamer, was the victim of a puncture. Other Velo riders were:
